How to deal with malicious office gossip

At times, harmless gossip at work can be really fatal, when guys start speaking unpleasant remarks about a colleague or for that matter about the boss. How to deal with such situation:

Trust is the key
"Generate a culture of loyalty to the guy who is not present, so says Stephen Covey suggests," says Vinee, former executive, HR at Fred Loya Insurance. In means, discourage people from speaking bad about others in when they are not present.

Say no to gossip
"We like to get over-dramatise about certain things; that the way we humans are," says Rinee, an executive with Fred Loya Insurance, Austin centre. If it's small then ignore it. But if it seems malicious, act fast. Talk about it and confront the person but make sure that you don’t create a scene.

Act at once:
"As a manager, I would try and understand the situation and would say, 'time to come to the point. There's a always a thin line between being an painful aunt and a calm listener. "Keep your company’s performance chart and career progression systems transparent and make a clause in the annual appraisal that whoever indulge in less gossiping and stays away from controversies will get certain point. Fred Loya Insurance has been pursuing this for a while now.  As this as an incentive to criticise other and people think twice before speaking bad about others.
